Choosing Your Wedding Gown

Before the invitations are sent out, the cake chosen, and the centerpieces designed, you will find yourself flipping through bridal magazines, surfing the internet, and window shopping. For what you ask? The perfect gown, of course!
Your gown selection will probably be one of the most meaningful purchases of your entire wedding. In fact, more deliberation and energy will be spent on choosing what you wear to your wedding than on any other item on your to-do list. But before you grab the first dress you come across, there are a few things you may want to think about before you slap your credit card down and walk out the dress shop doors, and possibly risk hating your new purchase the moment you get home!

Regardless of whether you are marrying in a traditional church setting or in a modest backyard gathering, your wedding dress should reflect certain things about who you are, like your individuality, personal style, and fashion taste. Do your research before you begin shopping. Learn the appropriate dress lingo and the types of fabrics and styles available. Being prepared will help you to navigate dress stores and be able to follow what the sales people are telling you about their stock.
Most girls have an idea of what their wedding gown is going to look like years before marriage is even on the horizon.

But it's important to try on various styles. You might find that your "dream" gown doesn’t look as nice on your particular body type as it may have on the pages of a magazine, on a professional model. Enjoy trying on as many dresses as you would like. Part of the fun of dress shopping is being able to play dress-up!
If possible, have pictures taken of you in your different dress selections. Why? After about the tenth dress you try on, they will all begin to look alike. This will make it a bit easier to narrow down your choices. Bring along your mom or your best friend; Someone who is honest and whose opinion you trust. They can offer their opinion, make suggestions, and take pictures and notes on potential gowns for you.

Like with every choice made in your wedding planning, set a dress budget that will include not just the dress, but your shoes, hosiery, lingerie, and veil. Expect off the rack gowns to begin at a cost of $250, while a custom made gown or designer label can cost upwards of $10,000. Bridal stores typically host sample sales at different times of the year or offer sales on discontinued styles and overstocks. Other costs to also consider are alterations, pressing, cleaning, and storage.
Once you find the “one”, buy it. Don’t think about it, don’t continue to look, just buy it.
By waiting, your risk the chance of it being gone when you finally return to make your purchase. Don’t risk the chance of being disappointed!

Remember, finding your perfect dress takes time. Give yourself enough time, take your time, and know that when it’s your time to walk down the aisle, you will be a vision of beauty to your family, friends, and most importantly, your future husband!
