Choosing Your Wedding Flowers
|
Choosing the flowers for your wedding day is only one of many steps you will take in the journey that is planning your nuptials!
Before you can begin selecting bouquets and centerpieces, you must first determine your color scheme. There are many factors that you will want to take into consideration when making this decision - What is your venue décor like? What time of year are you marrying? Do you have a favorite color that you want to incorporate into your special day?
Once the decision of color has finally been made, your next step is meeting with the florist of your choice. Most of us are pretty inexperienced in the floral department, so the task of being solely responsible for picking the perfect arrangements for the most important day of your life, is going to feel staggering at best.

Don’t fret! Beyond color, figure out what your overall vision is for your wedding. Are you gearing your festivities towards a simple and casual day? Maybe a bold contemporary design is more your style. Perhaps you are more traditional and focusing on an elegant setting.
Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, do some research. Look through wedding magazines or go on-line to get familiar with different flowers and styles. Educate yourself on the different varieties of flowers available that can be used to bring your ideas to life. Bringing this information to your florist can help he or she bring your ideas to fruition. Another great tip - bring pictures of what you don’t like to your florist. This will save valuable meeting time discussing options you’ve already determined are not your style.

It’s safe to say that you will spend a solid ten percent of your total budget on flowers. A good florist should always be flexible enough to work with any monetary restrictions you bring to the table. Remember, being budget conscience does not mean that you have to skimp on the floral portion of your wedding planning. Planning is critical in all areas of your budget. With careful planning, you should have plenty of money for not only your flowers, but all elements of your wedding.
So what exactly do you need in terms of flowers? Bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, centerpieces, and alter arrangements are just some of what you can expect to select and purchase for your wedding.

Depending on your total budget, you may want to look at certain elements that will make or break your budget, such as your wedding party size. It’s simple math - the more attendants, the more bouquets. Same goes with ushers and boutonnieres. Even guests figure in since the more you have in attendance, the more tables you need, which equals more centerpieces.
Ask your florist which flowers are in-season since these options are going to be readily available, as well as affordable. Having a Spring fling celebration? Choose tulips or lilies. How about a sizzling Summer wedding? Pick daisies or sunflowers. Incorporating the fall foliage into your day? Select chrysanthemums or marigolds. Maybe your dreaming of a festive holiday decor. Opt for holly or poinsettias.

Roses are probably the most universally known flower for weddings and certainly is a traditional, year round standby for any season or décor. Carnations are another great year round choice, that can be used as an inexpensive “filler” flower in your bouquets and centerpieces. Flowers are only one of many factors that help to set the vibe of your wedding day. Some will say that the flowers are the most significant elements of the day and that they provide the finishing touch needed on the long list of details that makes your day unique and special.
This may be true. Flowers are gorgeous and certainly fragrant and make a really great accessory to your day. But remember, you and your partner are the festivities main attraction. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
But that’s an entirely different conversation!
